Disentangling the stigma of HIV/AIDS from the stigmas of drugs use, commercial sex and commercial blood donation – A factorial survey of medical students in China
Background: HIV/AIDS related stigma interferes with the provision of appropriate care and
support for people living with HIV/AIDS. Currently, programs to address the stigma approach it as
if it occurs in isolation, separate from the co-stigmas related to the various modes of disease
transmission including injection drug use (IDU) and commercial sex (CS). In order to develop
better programs to address HIV/AIDS related stigma, the inter-relationship (or 'layering') between
HIV/AIDS stigma and the co-stigmas needs to be better understood. This paper describes an
experimental study for disentangling the layering of HIV/AIDS related stigmas.
Methods: The study used a factorial survey design. 352 medical students from Guangzhou were
presented with four random vignettes each describing a hypothetical male. The vignettes were
identical except for the presence of a disease diagnosis (AIDS, leukaemia, or no disease) and a cocharacteristic
(IDU, CS, commercial blood donation (CBD), blood transfusion or no cocharacteristic).
After reading each vignette, participants completed a measure of social distance that
assessed the level of stigmatising attitudes.
Results: Bivariate and multivariable analyses revealed statistically significant levels of stigma associated with AIDS, IDU, CS and CBD. The layering of stigma was explored using a recently
developed technique. Strong interactions between the stigmas of AIDS and the co-characteristics
were also found. AIDS was significantly less stigmatising than IDU or CS. Critically, the stigma of
AIDS in combination with either the stigmas of IDU or CS was significantly less than the stigma of
IDU alone or CS alone.
Conclusion: The findings pose several surprising challenges to conventional beliefs about HIV/
AIDS related stigma and stigma interventions that have focused exclusively on the disease stigma.
Contrary to the belief that having a co-stigma would add to the intensity of stigma attached to
people with HIV/AIDS, the findings indicate the presence of an illness might have a moderating
effect on the stigma of certain co-characteristics like IDU. The strong interdependence between
the stigmas of HIV/AIDS and the co-stigmas of IDU and CS suggest that reducing the co-stigmas
should be an integral part of HIV/AIDS stigma intervention within this context

A nature-derived, flexible and three dimensional (3D) nano-composite for chronic wounds pH monitoring
Current technologies on conductive carbon aerogels are merely for application of super-capacitors, anodes of lithium ion batteries and electrocatalysts. To our best knowledge, carbon nanofibre (CNF) aerogels in biomedical application of chronic wound monitoring have not been reported yet. In this paper, we proposed a chronic wounds pH sensor, which is based on 3D free-standing conductive CNF aerogel derived from pyrolyzed bacterial cellulose (p-BC) as conducting substrate and it is incorporated with flexible and proton-selective PDMS/PANI composite. The resulted p-BC/PDMS/PANI nanocomposite is soft, flexible, and can exhibit near Nernst limit pH sensitivity (~−50.4 mV/pH) in pH buffer solution, and −29 mV/pH in in vitro simulated wound fluid. This renders its applications in flexible bio-sensors and smart wound dressings

Shuffled Complex-Self Adaptive Hybrid EvoLution (SC-SAHEL) optimization framework
Simplicity and flexibility of meta-heuristic optimization algorithms have attracted lots of attention in the field of optimization. Different optimization methods, however, hold algorithm-specific strengths and limitations, and selecting the best-performing algorithm for a specific problem is a tedious task. We introduce a new hybrid optimization framework, entitled Shuffled Complex-Self Adaptive Hybrid EvoLution (SC-SAHEL), which combines the strengths of different evolutionary algorithms (EAs) in a parallel computing scheme. SC-SAHEL explores performance of different EAs, such as the capability to escape local attractions, speed, convergence, etc., during population evolution as each individual EA suits differently to various response surfaces. The SC-SAHEL algorithm is benchmarked over 29 conceptual test functions, and a real-world hydropower reservoir model case study. Results show that the hybrid SC-SAHEL algorithm is rigorous and effective in finding global optimum for a majority of test cases, and that it is computationally efficient in comparison to algorithms with individual EA
Hands-on reconfigurable robotic surgical instrument holder arm
Abstract: The use of conventional surgical tool holders requires an assistant during positioning and adjustment due to the lack of weight compensation. In this paper, we introduce a robotic arm system with hands-on control approach. The robot incorporates a force sensor at the end effector which realises tool weight compensation as well as hands-on manipulation. On the operating table, the required workspace can be tight due to a number of instruments required. There are situations where the surgical tool is at the desired location but the holder arm pose is not ideal due to space constraints or obstacles. Although the arm is a non-redundant robot because of the limited degrees of freedom, the pseudo-null-space inverse kinematics can be used to constrain a particular joint of the robot to a specific angle while the other joints compensate in order to minimise the tool movement. This allows operator to adjust the arm configuration conveniently together with the weight compensation. Experimental results demonstrated that our robotic arm can maintain the tool position during reconfiguration significantly more stably than a conventional one
Visible light communication for audio systems
This paper describes an audio system that is wellsuited for use in a small confined area with many audio transmitters broadcasting different audio signals. The transmitter of the proposed system is constructed using visible light LHDs, in which current fed to the LEDs is modulated and encoded with audio information or messages. The audio system provides audio signal transmission in a free space optical link. The receiver, combined with an ear jack, is located at some distance from the transmitters. The handheld receiver is designed to demodulate the optically transmitted audio information and reproduce the messages with the car jack. For modulating emission of T,HDs, an oscillator is used to vary the frequency of on/off periods of the LCDs. The frequency of flicker is high enough to be indistinguishable by human eye and hence the LRDs appear to be constantly illuminated. © 1999 IEEE.published_or_final_versio
Decision support for personalized cloud service selection through multi-attribute trustworthiness evaluation
Facing a customer market with rising demands for cloud service dependability and security, trustworthiness evaluation techniques are becoming essential to cloud service selection. But these methods are out of the reach to most customers as they require considerable expertise. Additionally, since the cloud service evaluation is often a costly and time-consuming process, it is not practical to measure trustworthy attributes of all candidates for each customer. Many existing models cannot easily deal with cloud services which have very few historical records. In this paper, we propose a novel service selection approach in which the missing value prediction and the multi-attribute trustworthiness evaluation are commonly taken into account. By simply collecting limited historical records, the current approach is able to support the personalized trustworthy service selection. The experimental results also show that our approach performs much better than other competing ones with respect to the customer preference and expectation in trustworthiness assessment. © 2014 Ding et al
Roles of a novel splice variant of human IFI16 in innate immune response

The recognition of self-DNA would induce autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In human, AIM2 like receptors (ALRs) including AIM2, IFI16, IFIX and MNDA are DNA binding proteins implicated in DNA sensing. Most ALRs contain an N-terminal pyrin domain and C-terminal HIN200 domains. However, mouse SLE susceptibility locus p202 encodes only HIN200 domains. A human homolog of p202 was not found. Prevalence and Social Inequality in Youth Loneliness in the UK.
Using data from the English arm of the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study, we examined the prevalence of loneliness for school-aged adolescents and how it is linked to social inequalities. The HBSC study collects data from 11-, 13-, and 15-year-olds, and is repeated every four years, allowing the exploration of prevalence rates of loneliness pre COVID-19 pandemic for comparison. We also explored whether loneliness was associated with socio-economic status (SES) and linked to academic attainment and health complaints. The total sample was 14,077 from 156 schools in England. Findings revealed a stable prevalence rate of 8.2% for loneliness from 2006 to 2014. We also found, across all survey years, (1) those aged 15 years were significantly lonelier than younger peers, (2) those who reported lower SES were lonelier than their more well-off peers, and (3) higher loneliness was associated with being '"below average" academically and reporting more health complaints. Conclusions: These prevalence data enable researchers, policymakers, and others to make comparisons with prevalence rates during the COVID-19 pandemic to explore whether there have been increases in loneliness among school-aged adolescents. Loneliness was consistently related to social inequalities, suggesting that targeted interventions that include whole systems changes are needed
Inertial-Based Filtration Method for Removal of Microcarriers from Mesenchymal Stem Cell Suspensions

Rapidly evolving cell-based therapies towards clinical trials demand alternative approaches for efficient expansion of adherent cell types such as human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). Using microcarriers (100–300 µm) in a stirred tank bioreactor offers considerably enhanced surface to volume ratio of culture environment. However, downstream purification of the harvested cell product needs to be addressed carefully due to distinctive features and fragility of these cell products. This work demonstrates a novel alternative approach which utilizes inertial focusing to separate microcarriers (MCs) from the final cell suspension. First, we systematically investigated MC focusing dynamics inside scaled-up curved channels with trapezoidal and rectangular cross-sections. A trapezoidal spiral channel with ultra-low-slope (Tan(α) = 0.0375) was found to contribute to strong MC focusing (~300 < Re < ~400) while managing high MC volume fractions up to ~1.68%. Accordingly, the high-throughput trapezoidal spiral channel successfully separated MCs from hMSC suspension with total cell yield~94% (after two passes) at a high volumetric flow rate of ~30 mL/min (Re~326.5)
